Stylohyoid Gutteral Pouch

The guttural pouch is opened medial to the stylohyoid bone through the standard and modified whitehouse approaches and care must be taken to avoid the pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve and the cranial laryngeal nerve which are close to the incision. The pharyngeal orifice is a funnel shaped opening in the dorsolateral aspect of the pharynx that forms an oblique slit rostral and ventral to the dorsal pharyngeal recess. Each pouch is moulded around the stylohyoid bone which divides the medial and lateral compartments.
